If you have more than one computer in your home and want to share the printer, files & folders, or the Internet connection between them, then you need a network. What type of Internet connection can I share in my network? It is recommended you share a high-speed Internet connection in your network such as DSL or Cable; however, it is also possible to share your dialup connection, but it will be somewhat slow between all the computers. Should I have a wired network or a wireless network? A wired network is where all computers connect together with physical data cabling between them. A wireless network is where the computer as an antenna attached to it and it communicates over the network through a radio signal. It is ossible to have a combination of a wired network and wireless network all in the same area. Basically, if you don't want the hassle of running network cables and you want the ablility to move around in your house, say with a laptop computer, then a wireless network is for you. If on the other hand, you have fixed locations for each of your computers and you don't plan on moving them often and you don't mind running network cables to each computer location, then a wired network would be more of a solution for you. Depending on how many computers and what types, desktops or laptops, a combination of the wired & wireless networks may work for you. What are the advantages & disadvantages of a wireless network? - Convenience & freedom to work anywhere (within signal range of course!) - Minimize the number of network cables needed. You may not need any. - The biggest disadvantage is that wireless network right out of the box is not secure. It sets up quick but unless you secure it, anyone within range of your network can pick up your signal and can get into your network. That's not something they tell you and that's why you need Lynlinks professional network services to secure your wireless network. What are the advantages & disadvantages of a wired network? - Lower costs as wired networks use the most affordable products and provide the fastest network transfer speeds available. - The distance between computers is less restricted in wired networks - up to 300 feet typically, or longer with equipment. - If you're moving large amounts of multimedia data, for example, then a wired network is for you. - Wired networks are more secure as the only way someone can tap into your network is with a physical connection into it. - A disadvantage would be having to purchase and install the network cabling as well as not being able to move a computer to a different location without either a longer network cable or having another cable installed. That can sometimes be a hassle. | Related Links
